Hungarian tabloid unimpressed by boozy British birds

This probably isn't big news in the UK where the sight of gaggles of girls with too much make-up on, too little clothing and high heels that prevent them from walking straight is par for the course, but drunken girls are not nearly as acceptable where I am sitting - in Hungary. And article and the accompanying pictures about how Cambridge students celebrate graduation appearing in Hungarian tabloid Bors (in Hungarian) prove the point. I am including this link because sometimes it pays to see yourself as others might see you. It is safe to say that British women (and men) are looked down upon in countries were lad culture is not as pervasive and women still prefer to look good even (or especially) at the end of a night. I recently experienced this first hand when a hen group I was leading around Budapest got into a spot of bother with a taxi driver. One of the girls, whe was very much worse for wear, threw up in a taxi. Although they had a point about their subsequent treatment by the cab driver, their level of intoxication left both the taxi driver and, later, the police unimpressed.

Alcohol putting pensioners in hospital

drinking

There has been an increase of number of middle-class pensioners being admitted to hospital because of alcohol abuse (drunken falls, mental problems associated with excessive drinking and alcoholic liver disease as well as the toxic effect of alcohol), reports the Daily Mail

Facts and figures:

  • 323,595 alcohol-related hospital admissions among the over 65s in 2006/07, compared with 197,584 recorded 4 years ago.

Put down to people who find they cannot cope with being almost housebound following retirement and are cut off from friends and relations. Others are the spouses of dementia sufferers who find the pressures of caring for their partner almost too much to bear.

Women 'buy four-fifths of wine drunk in the home'

Women buy 8 out of 10 bottles of wine drunk at home, a survey claimed yesterday.

Research involving more than 1,300 British women aged between 18 and 60 overturned perceptions of women's role in wine-buying.

6 out of 10 said they drank wine at least once a week.  Some 55% said they preferred red, against 35% for white and 7% for rose.

British teenagers are the binge-dringing champions of Europe

Teens binge drinking

British teenagers are among the worst binge drinkers in Europe, with grils more likely to get drunk than boys, claim researchers.  A European survey reveals 'chronic' drinking problems in 15 and 16-year-olds, which leads to rifts with parents, unplanned pregnancies and injuries.
